"Spending time with my Little Brother is easy.  Stuff I’d do anyway is more fun with him."

In our lives, each of us shared an important connection with someone who broadened our horizons and brought a little magic into our lives.

It was the person who taught you to throw that perfect spiral, or sat in the front row to cheer you on, even when it was embarrassing. These are the little moments that Big Brothers and Big Sisters experience every day.

These real life stories are just a few of the ways Big Brothers Big Sisters is changing lives and communities forever.

Miriam (Big Sister of the Year) and Arleth Read Everything

2008 Big Sister of the Year, Miriam, and her Little, Arleth, enjoy spending time and reading together.Since meeting eight years ago when Arleth was six, Big Sister Miriam and Little Sister Arleth have had amazing adventures together.  They’ve explored wilderness, roamed through big cities, visited the beach and the mountains, sat in theaters, and looked through museums.  They’ve been almost everywhere.  It makes me tired just thinking about all these adventures.  But Arleth has big dreams and Miriam is determined to help her achieve her full potential and realize all those dreams. (Miriam sure is a great Big.  No wonder she’s Big Sister of the Year)

Everything hasn’t been as wonderful as it sounds so far.  There have been hard times.  But through it all Miriam has been a rock of strength and confidence helping not just Arleth but her whole family. As a matter of fact, Leticia, Arleth’s mom, gives Miriam the highest praise when she says “Miriam has not only been a blessing in Arleth’s life, but she has also been a blessing in all our lives.”

This match has been so perfect that it’s amazing.  How did we know that Miriam and six year old Arleth both share curiosity about world cultures and travel, music, theater, and nature?  And yes, the title does refer to the fact that they both love books and reading and learning.  Boy do they love books.  They can’t walk past a bookstore without stopping in to look around.  Who knows how many bookstores they’ve explored together.

Right now, Miriam and her family are helping Arleth prepare for college.  She is determined to be the first one in her family to go to college and has her sights set on Oxford or NYU.

So it’s no wonder that Miriam is Big Sister of the Year.  And we have a special treat for you.  Here's a video you can watch and hear Miriam and Arleth in their own words.  Make sure you have lots of tissues handy.  And we can’t help but end with Arleth’s own words, “without Miriam in my life who knows where I would be.”
