What started out as a simple friendship, turned into a bond of sisterhood. "Being fortunate to have a loving family, I wanted to impart that positive experience back to the community. Little did I realize that this commitment would change my life forever," said Big Sister, Lavanya Murugesan.
For her dedication and commitment Lavanya was awarded this year's Fred A. Einer Jr., "Big of the Year" Award. Nominated by her Match Support Specialist, Lavanya was chosen to represent the Community Mentoring program as the "Big Sister of the Year". After being recognized at the BBBS of SDC Everyday Heroes event in April, Lavanya's efforts as a Big Sister catapulted her into the distinguished honor of "Big of the Year" for 2006. She is the epitome of what we hope all our children will find in a mentor.
Lavanya and Kelsee have been matched since May of 2003. In that time, Lavanya noticed that Kelsee was taking school seriously and her grades were improving." This was a result of Kelsee realizing that school is the gateway to a successful future," said Lavanya. "This was not the case before we met."
"Before I had a Big Sister, I felt very alone because I didn't have a mom and it was hard for me to relate to my dad and the other adults around me," said Kelsee. "Lavanya has helped me in a lot of different ways. Besides becoming a better student, I've been playing more sports and she's helped me to make some new friends. I used to be very shy, but Lavanya has taught me to be myself and have fun with other people."
That impact was felt by Lavanya the year Kelsee gave her a Mother's Day card. "Hearing Kelsee say that I am her role model and getting a Mother's Day card where she tells me that I am the closest to a Mom she has ever had tells me that I can make a BIG difference in a child's life by being a mentor."
There is no question to the influence Lavanya has made on Kelsee's self esteem and confidence. Kelsee cannot say enough positive praise about her Big Sister, and the constant encouragement she receives. But the gifts do not end with Kelsee. Lavanya acknowledges that seeing the difference she has made in Kelsee's life is the most gratifying and satisfying experience." It puts into perspective what is really important in this world and enables you to appreciate the real and more important things in life."
But no one can say it better than Kelsee. "No matter how long we are in the program I will always look up to her as a sister."
