In our lives, each of us shared an important connection with someone who broadened our horizons and brought a little magic into our lives.
It was the person who taught you to throw that perfect spiral, or sat in the front row to cheer you on. They challenged you to reach for your goals and celebrated each little success along the way. These are the little moments that Big Brothers and Big Sisters experience every day.
These real life stories are just a few of the ways Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County is changing lives and our community forever.
“A Ceremonial Story”
|
The positive impacts of having a mentor in the life of a child are undeniable. This story shows how simple moments can mean the world to a child who needs an extra boost. After being matched for only three months, Big Brother Michael Bucher and Little Brother Jacob have experienced memories that will last a lifetime.
Jacob first began his search for a Big Brother with our organization on March 1, 2006. His father is deployed with the US Navy and has only been home 32 days out of the past year. When Jacob first came in for his interview, he was sad and missed his father, and had been acting out as a result. Jacob was matched on April 26th, 2006, and his mom recently called to report that all of Jacob’s outbursts have since stopped. Jacob then quickly grabbed the phone to give his own report, and give his Big Brother Michael a “shout out.”
“Michael is the best friend I ever had,” exclaimed Jacob. “I got on TV because of him!” The excitement in his voice was immeasurable.
Jacob went on to tell the story of the day Michael took him to their first Padres game together. Michael and Jacob had just arrived at the ball park when Michael found the ear of a local radio station working the event. Michael began telling the story of his match, only 50 days after meeting his Little Brother. The radio station was so moved by their match story that they let them come onto the field to meet the players, and Jacob was allowed to throw the first ceremonial pitch.
But Michael and Jacob aren’t the only two that have noticed the special addition made in each other’s lives. Jacob’s mom says that the Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County program has done so much for her family and she is so grateful to have found Michael as Jacob’s Big Brother.
