What is BBBS of SDC tweeting about?

Not only is the child impacted by the relationship, but the volunteer is forever changed by the experience.

"Spending just four hours a month with my Little Brother is easy - in fact, it's usually the best part of my week."

In our lives, each of us shared an important connection with someone who broadened our horizons and brought a little magic into our lives.

It was the person who taught you to throw that perfect spiral, or sat in the front row to cheer you on. They challenged you to reach for your goals and celebrated each little success along the way. These are the little moments that Big Brothers and Big Sisters experience every day.

These real life stories are just a few of the ways Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County is changing lives and our community forever.

"A Bond of Brotherhood"

The beginning stages of what would later become...

A Lifelong Friendship.

“Spending time with Joshua gives me a healthier perspective on what meaningful time is,” says Chris.  Every Tuesday morning, Chris picks Joshua up and takes him to school, so they have an opportunity to talk and Joshua says he goes to Chris for advice on social or family situations.  They also make time to get together to see a concert, watch a movie, or simply go for a walk.  Always encouraging Joshua to read, Chris has even purchased several books over the years that Joshua was into at the time, so they could read them together and discuss their thoughts.  Joshua says, “We have created many memories over the years.   If I were to list the things we have done, the list would be a mile long!”

“Chris has been a huge inspiration in my life,” said Joshua.  “He has not only helped me socially, but academically.” Chris helped Joshua get into his current High School (High Tech High International).  Even before high school came around, Chris took Joshua to a college campus’ every year for Joshua’s birthday to see them first hand.  Joshua says, “Seeing all the colleges has helped me set many goals for my future; goals like going to and graduating from college, becoming a professional musician and opening my own business.”

When asked if there has been an important moment or circumstance that helped illustrate the positive effect of mentoring, Chris said “I understand it every time I've heard him say he wants to attend UCLA since I took him to visit the campus.  When I see what he's learning and what a vibrant, caring and creative place he spends his days, I know I did at least this one thing right.”

As a true testament of their connection and bond, Joshua’s mom says that her son’s confidence and self-esteem have grown by leaps and bounds as a result of Chris’s support and encouragement over the years.  Chris says, “The more we grow as friends the more reciprocation there is from Joshua that makes it more of a bond between equals.  What started with Joshua being my cause has developed into him becoming my friend.”
