"5 Years Strong, Without an End in Sight"
Matched back in March of 2003, Ken and Mario started out as any other match – seeing each other about once a week to go to the movies, grab some food or hit up a local street fair. Despite two very busy schedules, Mario referred to the match as “pretty cool” after only a couple of months and Ken mentioned an increased excitement for school in Mario. Everyone involved was happy to see a strong friendship growing.
Since then, the two have continued to grow closer, making annual trips to the Miramar Air show a tradition, and learning how to fish together. The friendship they have formed is an inspiration to all – which leads us to Ken’s newest contribution to BBBS.
After joining the BBBS inaugural ambassador group in September of 2007, Ken has been actively involved in the group by assisting the Recruitment team. Through sharing his experiences as a Big Brother to potential volunteers and hosting presentations at various workplaces including his own, Ken’s commitment and dedication are contagious in the best sense of the word.
“It is in my blood to help people without expecting something in return,” said Ken. “And being a Big Brother is one of those ways. It keeps me young, and makes me take more time to play around. I love being a Big, and know that I have a wonderful friendship with my Little Brother, Mario.”
A constant supporter of our agency, Ken began golfing in the Golf Marathon in 2004 and has never missed a year, including one year when he took his mother who was visiting from Sweden around the course. Anyone who has the pleasure of meeting Ken knows the compassion and generosity that he exudes is purely genuine. Most importantly, of course, being his Little Brother.
“I’m able to recognize my positive effect on Mario when we talk about work habits, and he shares with me what he wants to study and what he wants to be as an adult,” said Ken. “Through him, I have learned the process of applying for schools, and I’m proud to see that he will be going to college after high school. I just wish everyone else could know that it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to have fun, share your knowledge and spend a bunch of great times with a super person.”
If you have the honor of meeting Ken at one of our next events, make sure you ask to see one of his business cards.
