The 2008 Community-Based Big of the Year Jeff Alseth

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands is proud to announce that Jeff Alseth was selected as the 2008 Community-Based Big of the Year.  Jeff was recognized at the annual Friends of Mentoring Luncheon.

When the staff makes a match at Big Brothers Big Sisters, it is a very important process.  They consider the needs of the child and the interests of the mentor.  They discuss their personalities, hobbies, and interests.  Jeff and his Little Brother Aron seem to be the perfect match for each other. Pictured above is Jeff and his Little Brother Aron.

Jeff and Aron meet on a weekly basis and enjoy bowling, swimming, playing games together, and going out for breakfast.  Jeff has also taken Aron to Husker home football games (where they have sat in the sky boxes) and have also gone sailing on several occasions.  Jeff is very involved in their relationship and when they are together, all of Jeff's attention is focused on Aron.

Even through life changing events, Jeff as been there for Aron.  When Jeff was suddenly diagnosed with cancer and was hospitalized, he stayed in contact with Aron.  Even during the most serious part of his hospitalization, Aron was always on his mind.  Jeff is currently in remission and is doing well.

With the support of Jeff, Aron has excelled in school; making the honor roll and becoming a member of the football team.  As you might expect, Jeff was there in the stands cheering for Aron at his first football game.  Jeff's life experiences and personal dedication have made him a wonderful role model for Aron, helping him know more about his community and opportunities for the future.

Unfortunately Jeff was unable to attend the Friends of Mentoring Luncheon to accept his award.  Accepting on his behalf was his daughter, Kate Alseth (second from left).  Pictured along with Kate (from left) is Ken Mar - Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands Board President, Little Brother Aron, Aron's Mother, and La Vista Mayor Doug Kindig.
