Let’s Give Thanks: Looking Back on the Year You Made Possible
Theodore Roosevelt said “Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” It is with profound gratitude on this Giving Tuesday that we recall a great year for Big Brothers Big Sisters, made possible through the support of volunteers, families, donors, partners and advocates like you.
We’re truly grateful for the strong partner involvement throughout the past year. Corporate partners such as Comcast NBC Universal, Tostitos and Great Wolf Lodge hosted events and lent their support to efforts that helped recruit new mentors for children facing adversity. Syndicated radio host Michael Baisden, a longtime champion of the power of mentoring, has lent his voice and resources in support of our Mentoring Brothers in Action Initiative. This year, with the support of our fraternity partners, we were able to re-launch MentoringBrothers.org. Partners like Univision and MetLife have helped us grow our Hispanic Mentoring program, and this fall we celebrated the launch of LatinoBigs.org. New alliances with United Way and the American Graduate Day coalition are demonstrating Big Brothers Big Sisters’ proven impact on education.
We’re thankful for the incredible Bigs, Littles, and families that we got to know this year. In partnership with the Ad Council, we watched relationships grow and thrive as part of the Start Something Web Series. This summer, we celebrated the 2012 National Big Brother and National Big Sister of the Year: two individuals whose passion for mentoring highlights the very best of what Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies achieve each day. With the support of advocates and ambassadors like Darrin Smith, Carlos Andrés Gómez and Ryan Potter, we continue to spread the message of Big Brothers Big Sisters and recruit mentors to continue to create and support long-term, one-to-one mentoring relationships.
We give thanks for a strong network of dedicated employees, leaders and board members working in communities across the country. In the last year, Raymund A. Paredes, Leonard A. Bernstein, Rudy J. Baldoni and James B. Lee, Jr. have all joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s National Board of Directors. Each of the new board members brings expertise, experience and wisdom to the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization and for that, we are truly grateful.
Our Executive team has grown, as well. On June 15, T. Charles Pierson joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters team as President and CEO. He has been an amazing leader and motivator for the organization since he came on board. Joining Charles on our Executive team, Mary Flores, Marlene L. Olshan and Lowell Perry Jr. have all transitioned from Big Brothers Big Sisters local agencies to the National Office, bringing with them a vast knowledge of the organization that will help further the work of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.
Finally, there is one more person we would like to thank - YOU. Without the generous support of mentors, donors, families and supporters, we would not be able to provide assistance to children facing adversity. As this dynamic year comes to an end, Big Brothers Big Sisters looks back in gratitude, but looks forward to all that is to come.
