|Proof That Even the Unexpected Match Can Be Magical|
More than 20 years ago, 6-year-old Jaime Allman met the woman who would be his Big Sister, Ruth Wine. As their friendship began, it did not matter that there was a bit of an age difference. Even if that age difference happened to be more than 70 years.
Today, 20 years later, Ruth Wine has since celebrated her 102nd birthday. Their relationship is more than just friendship. Jaime and Ruth treat each other more like family, with Ruth attending many of the major milestones in his life, including his wedding and baby shower.
They both agree that the “generation” gap has no impact on the closeness of their relationship. Ruth sees Jaime as family, and Jamie sees it as his responsibility to help look after her, helping her out of the car or into restaurants when they are together.
According to Susan Totty, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters Harrisonburg-Rockingham County, their story has drawn quite a lot of positive feedback. She says that their story is a testimony to the overall mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters, “You are never too old to make a big difference in a child’s life!”
