|Big Brothers Big Sisters Rolls Out the Purple Carpet for a Local Big|
January is National Mentoring Month, a time for everyone to recognize the mentors in their lives. Most people have someone in their lives who helped to make them who they are today; they contributed to their success. Jan. 16 was “Thank Your Mentor Day” and Big Brothers Big Sisters of America had the opportunity to help put together a signature “Purple Carpet” event. Isaiah, a local Little Brother, was able to celebrate and recognize his mentor, his Big Brother Jared during Jared's school day at the University of North Texas (UNT).
Students, representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lone Star agency, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America’s National Office and family members were on hand to set the scene for Jared and Isaiah’s surprise Purple Carpet event on the Library Mall on the campus in Denton. Jared had no idea he was going to be recognized, applauded and handed a big handmade thank you card from 11 year old Isaiah. Isaiah’s mom stood alongside Jared’s parents and grandparents to join in the fun.
In addition, reporters and media representatives from local news, including NBC, ABC, UNT’s North Texas Television - ntTV and the Denton Record-Chronicle helped capture the moment, to cover National Thank Your Mentor Day.
Jared and Isaiah have been matched for two years now, and they agree that they are both seeing the benefits from their relationship. Jared even went so far as to say that Isaiah continues to teach him certain things. While Isaiah mentioned that Jared does occasionally help him with his school work, he really just enjoys having someone to hang out with. They talk and play video games, and they do a lot of sports, including bowling and playing basketball. One other thing they both agree on is they enjoy – anything to do with food!
Isaiah’s mom said she appreciates seeing the changes and maturity in Isaiah, due to being involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. She likes knowing Jared will be there for her boy and Isaiah will always have someone to talk to, but also have someone to help hold him accountable for how he presents himself and how he performs in school.
Thank Your Mentor Day is a day to recognize and honor one’s mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters and all of our supporters understand that without our Bigs who put in the effort to make a positive impact in their Littles’ lives, none of what we do as an organization would be possible. Thank Your Mentor Day, and National Mentoring Month, is for them. Here are some links to local media coverage:
