Often local sports teams and athletes look for opportunities to help give back to, or serve, the communities in which they live and take to the pro sports stage. Athletes and celebrities will sometimes create their own foundations, but occasionally they establish relationships with local organizations. Recently, members from NBA team the Charlotte Bobcats and their dancers and cheerleaders, the Lady Cats, hosted members from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Charlotte for a basketball clinic.
Throughout the course of the clinic, Bigs and Littles had the chance to move through several different stations, learning basketball skills and fundamentals from some of the pro players who were there. With a nod towards the concept of teamwork, the Bobcats instructed the participants about the importance of working together through teaching them about passing, shooting, dribbling and how to play defense.
The night’s event culminated in a Q-and-A session where Bigs and Littles were able to ask any question of the players. On their way out, everyone involved posed for pictures, and Littles were presented with souvenir gift bags from the Charlotte Bobcats.
Jeff Adrien, a Bobcats forward, has special insight into the benefits of mentoring through an organization like Big Brothers Big Sisters. Adrien participated in the program as a Little Brother when he was growing up. He considers his time as a Little Brother as something that kept him out of trouble while growing up.
Big Brothers Big Sisters welcomes and appreciates the support of local athletes and celebrities. Through their help, Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies can involve their matches in fun and memorable activities, while continuing to support the broader focus of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mission to support children who face adversity by providing professionally supported, one-to-one mentoring that can have a dramatic and profound, positive impact on their lives.
