Each week, students from Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet School visit with their mentors, residents at the Presbyterian Village North community. The meetings are part of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Lone Star program in Dallas, Texas called the “Generations Mentoring Program.” Students are matched with their Bigs for this particular program based on their responses to questionnaires they fill out.
Once a week, the students visit their Bigs on Wednesday to share and enjoy refreshments, play games, have conversations and simply spend time together. Many of the residents at Presbyterian Village North enjoy the opportunity to tell the children about their life experiences but the children and elders teach each other new games.
Their contact with one another is not limited to the one hour per week that they spend together. Often they correspond with each other by writing letters, and sometimes they speak on the phone.
Everyone, from the school children and the residents, values the experience gained from participating in the program. Ron Kelly, the executive director at Presbyterian Village North, spoke of the happiness that the children who participate in the program bring to their facility.
