|34 Million Twitter Impressions! That’s Hispanic Heritage Month at Big Brothers Big Sisters! |
Big Brothers Big Sisters, LatinoBigs and the Latina Mom Bloggers teamed up for an amazingly successful Twitter party. On Oct. 8, 154 people signed up for a lively discussion entitled “Calling All Hombres to Step Up and Become Mentors.”
“This year during Hispanic Heritage Month, which wrapped up on Oct. 15, Big Brothers Big Sisters envisioned a call to action,” said Deanna Sauceda, Director of Media Relations and Community Engagement for Big Brothers Big Sisters. “There are good signs in terms of working with our Hispanic and Latino youth, but the reality is we have thousands of children waiting to be matched and the majority of those children are of color and 70 percent of those children are boys. We need our Hispanic men to add one more child to their family!”
Cristy Clavijo-Kish, co-founder and co-CEO of the Latina Mom Blogger group, a national network consisting of more than 550 members, said the conversation and response that took place were incredible.
“As mothers, wives, sisters, amigas and more, we carry tremendous influence over the men in our lives,” she said. “It was inspiring to see how the power of our families could really help children who may not have that level of support.”
Independent studies find that once enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters, children are more likely than their peers to improve in school, make healthier lifestyle choices and achieve higher self-esteem and aspirations. The Twitter party shared that message with more than 300,000 potential followers. That’s the power of Hispanic Heritage Month.
