Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia a Group of Angels

South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond and Heidi Johnson, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia
Recently Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia (S.C.) received laudable recognition from South Carolina Secretary of State, Mark Hammond, who named the organization among the “Angels” on the state’s annual “Scrooges and Angels” list for nonprofits for 2013.

To be considered an Angel, nonprofits must demonstrate that at least 80 percent of their funding goes directly to their designated charitable cause. Additionally, nonprofits must be at least three or more years old, they must use volunteer services, and must receive minimal funding from grants of any kind.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia’s CEO Heidi Johnson was on hand at a press conference and reception held to recognize and honor this year’s Angels. All representatives from nonprofit organizations received a special plaque, presented by Secretary Hammond. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Columbia spent 85.6 percent of their raised funds toward program services.

Secretary Hammond took the opportunity to highlight these organizations, while at the same time denouncing the Scrooges from 2013. He pointed out the importance of properly researching the practices of any nonprofit or charitable organization prior to donating or supporting them.
