FBI Director Presents Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest with Community Leadership Award

Big Brothers Big Sisters Columbia Northwest runs a “Second Chance Program,” providing mentoring services to youth between the ages of 12 and 17 who are involved with the juvenile justice system. Recently, the Portland Division of the FBI recognized the agency and the Second Chance Program by presenting them with the Director’s Community Leadership Award.

Baltimore Orioles Players and Coaches Hold Clinic for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast

During spring training, Major League Baseball teams from across the transplanted to their spring training locations, putting on exhibition games and trying out young prospects ahead of opening day and the official start of the season. The Baltimore Orioles spend their spring training in Sarasota, Fla., and recently they hosted a number of Bigs and Littles from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Sun Coast for a baseball clinic!

Big Brothers Big Sisters and Dallas Cowboy Edgar Jones Kick Off "Edgar Jones' Big Read"
On March 26, Dallas Cowboys defensive end Edgar Jones took a break from reading his playbook to spend some time with local school children at Tisinger Elementary School in Mesquite, Texas. Jones read to a number of children participating in Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star’s school-based program.

Pro Skateboarder Shows Big Brothers Big Sisters the Way
Recently, pro skateboarder Danny Way helped lead a “Build-A-Board Workshop for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kauai’s site-based program at Kapa’a Elementary School. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kaua’i consists of a number of school-based mentoring programs, as well as a handful of community-based matches, as a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Hawaii.

Embassy Bank Contributes $35,000 towards Big Brothers Big Sisters’ High School Bigs Program
Big Brothers Big Sisters Lehigh Valley recently received $35,000 from Embassy Bank in Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) funding to support its High School Bigs Program in the Bethlehem Area School District.

Fort Wayne Mayor Recognizes Bigs for National Mentoring Month

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana and Southcentral Michigan hosted a National Mentoring Month celebratory event on Thursday, Jan. 30, in appreciation for their Bigs. In addition to supporters and several matches from the local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency, Mayor Tom Henry of Fort Wayne, Ind. joined the party.

Michael Yokel understands firsthand the kind of impact that a strong mentor can have on a young person who lacks a role model. Not all that long ago, Yokel was a 12-year-old boy without any sort of male mentor figure in his life. He enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Paso where he was eventually matched up with Charles “Chuck” Taylor.

Littles Bring Happiness to the Elderly in Special Mentoring Program

Each week, students from Hamilton Park Pacesetter Magnet School visit with their mentors, residents at the Presbyterian Village North community. The meetings are part of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Lone Star program in Dallas, Texas called the “Generations Mentoring Program.” Students are matched with their Bigs for this particular program based on their responses to questionnaires they fill out.

Phones Ringing Off the Hook Mark an Agency’s Successful Finish to National Mentoring Month

Bringing an end to their National Mentoring Month activities, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico cashed in on an amazing opportunity, with some support from local media KRQE News 13 (KASA Fox 2). Volunteers from the agency were welcomed to the studio in Albuquerque to hold a four hour long phone-a-thon to raise money and draw attention to the need for support for Big Brothers Big Sisters.
