NEW TRANSPORTATION LAWS!!!!!!!!
Texas Transportation Code
As part of our commitment to child safety, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Midland wishes to ensure that all parents/guardians and volunteers in our program are aware of a recent change in automobile restraint regulations in the State of Texas.
Please be advised that every child under the age of 8, unless he/she is taller than 4 feet 9 inches, must be secured in a child passenger safety seat during the operation of a motor vehicle.
The new booster seat law came into effect on September 1, 2009. At this time, warnings are being issued for violations and police officers will begin issuing tickets as of June 1, 2010.
We encourage our parents/guardians and volunteers to work together to ensure that children are always safely transported in accordance with state law. For any BBBS volunteer who has occasion to transport a child under the age of 8 (and less than 4 feet 9 inches tall), and who does not own an age appropriate booster seat, we offer the following options:
1) Ask the parent/guardian to loan you a booster seat when you are transporting their child.
2) If it is not possible for the parent/guardian to loan a seat, please contact your BBBS Mentoring Specialist to discuss discounts available for the purchase of a booster seat.
3) Sergeant Craig Matthews, with the Midland Police Department, is a great resource for more information (and instruction on how to properly install a booster seat of any kind).
