Fishing Fun Starts Here!

So many good childhood memories start by the ol’ fishing hole. You’re learning from a mentor, and there’s plenty of time to ask questions or just enjoy the silence together. Plus, fishing is one activity for which bigger isn’t always better. A young person in your life just might catch more fish than you do!

Not a fishing expert? No problem. Anyone can fish! Here are some sites you can visit that will help get you started this weekend.

Where to Fish
Don’t think that you have to drive far to find a fishing spot. Most Americans live within 30 minutes of a place you can drop your line! Here’s a link to help you find a fishing hole that’s close to you: http://www.takemefishing.org/PlacesToGo

How to Fish
Fishing is an activity you can learn by doing. They’re not biting where you are? Try moving. They don’t like your bait? Try something else. But there are some basics you should know, and you can find them here: http://www.wikihow.com/Catch-a-Fish

Where to Get Equipment
Check with a state park near you — there may be a place where you can rent equipment inexpensively. Investigate used equipment on www.craigslist.com. Or ask around! We’re guessing you have family, friends and neighbors who just might have some fishing equipment lying around that you can borrow.

How to Clean a Fish
We strongly recommend “catch and release” fishing, so your fish will live to swim another day. But if you’d like to clean the fish to prepare for eating, read on. You’ll have to supervise and do some of the cutting. Here’s a site with some information on turning a fresh fish into fillets: http://www.capmel.com/how_to-fillet_fish.htm

Young people need outdoor activities like fishing. And they need mentors.

If you enjoy kicking back for an afternoon, fishing on the dock, then you can be a mentor.  Volunteer now.
