Since 1961, Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County has reached out to our community’s youth, helping them find the support they need when they are in need of a quality adult role model in their lives. We are an independent, nonprofit agency, with highly experienced local staff and leadership, as well as a board of directors comprised of San Diego leaders within the community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has remained the expert in youth mentoring since its founding in 1904.  We provide one-to-one mentoring relationships between volunteers and children throughout the United States and Big Brothers Big Sisters International is in 33 countries around the world.  Click here to read about the history of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The Need
According to the National Mentoring Partnership there are approximately 17.6 million young people who want and need a caring adult mentor to help them succeed. Of those 17.6 million, only 2.5 million are currently in formal mentoring relationships. That means that 15.1 million youths are still in need of formal mentoring relationships. This population is more vulnerable to negative influences leading to drug abuse, school failure and delinquency.

How We Help
Our solution is simple and effective.  We match these children with caring adult friends who can provide the one-to-one attention children need to grow into happy and successful adult members of our community.

Our effectiveness here in San Diego County depends greatly on the support of community members. Much of our funding comes from local private and corporate donations. Without our local volunteer base, we simply would not exist.
