What is BBBS of SDC tweeting about?

In our Operation Bigs Program, we provide mentors to children whose parents are deployed.

“As far as helping another Marine family, it just goes along with our philosophy: We take care of our own; we don’t leave anybody behind, and that includes our families.”

Bigs in Schools

During the school year, Big Brothers Big Sisters meet with their Little Brother or Little Sister at the child's school once a week for an hour after the school day has ended.  Currently we have four "Bigs in Schools" programs in the mid-city area of San Diego.  Sessions are after school hours, some start as late as 4:30 p.m.

Just one hour a week can mean the world to a child

Bigs in Schools focuses on building friendships, and through those friendships, stronger literacy and social skills are developed.  This is not a tutoring program, but rather a chance for you to build a friendship in a fun environment, while reinforcing the importance of learning.  This program is ideal for those that may only have an hour a week to volunteer.

The Bigs and Littles meet at the school library, school computer room, or on the playground to read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life and personal issues - just as friends do.

Research has shown that of all children matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister in school:

  • 58% improved their school performance
  • 65% showed higher levels of self-confidence
  • 55% had a better attitude toward school
  • 64% developed more positive attitudes toward school
  • 77% increased self-esteem
  • 100% were less likely than their peers to repeat a grade
  • 100% had decreased unexcused absences
