School-based Program
The smell of chalk and freshly sharpened pencils … the sounds of textbooks being opened and teachers' voices … it's time to go to school!
BBBS offers adults and high school students the chance to go back to their early school days through our School-based Program. In the School-based Program, volunteers meet with young people for one hour a week at a school near the volunteer's home or work. When the school year ends, matches have the option of participating in BBBS summer activities, such as an ice cream social, picnic or a tour of the local Humane Society.
Matches can choose from a variety of activities. A match that likes sports might play basketball in the gym, while a match with artistic interests might make a photo collage of their time together. If a volunteer meets with the child over the lunch hour, they might share a meal together. There's never time to be bored!
Big Brothers and Sisters in this program are friends, not tutors. Although some matches decide to work on homework together, that is not a requirement. The only requirement is a willingness to be a friend to a child. It might not seem like much to spend an hour a week with a Little Brother or Sister, but studies have shown that this time does make a BIG difference.
During the match, a School-based Match Coordinator will regularly check in with the match to foster the relationship's growth.
For one hour a week, you can leave a positive legacy on a child's life.
