June 2011 - Match of the Month

Big Brother Lincoln

Little Brother Jefry

Every Wednesday, in the middle of his twelve-hour workday, Lincoln takes a break to spend quality time with Jefry, his fourteen year old Little Brother. "It's the highlight of my week," says Lincoln, grateful that his employer allows him the time to do this. Together for nine months, he and Jefry were the very first to be matched as part of the National PAL Mentoring Program, which provides one-to-one mentoring through a special partnership between Nashua PAL Youth Safe Haven and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

"We have 17 successful matches since our program started and our goal is to have 50 matches by 2012," says Jan McCaughey, Civilian Director & PAL Mentoring Coordinator. "To accomplish this, we need volunteers willing to devote an hour a week to our mission." She also proudly states that they are currently the only PAL organization in the country to have a partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters. "We are thrilled to be teaming up with PAL to make a positive difference for the children in the program who need a reliable friend and role model", says Melissa Goerbig-Frizzell, Chief Operating Officer at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Nashua & Greater Salem.

Jefry and Lincoln enjoy playing pool and basketball among other activities, but both agree that the best part about being a match is having time to talk. "Getting together every week is what's important to us," says Lincoln. However, they admit that when they first met, they were both a bit unsure about the match. "I had my doubts, but all that has changed," says Jefry. "Now we laugh more than we probably should", quips Lincoln as they chuckle. "When we first started, I thought I was the one who was giving more to the relationship," he says. "Now I feel that I'm the one who's getting more."

They both encourage others to volunteer and join the mentoring program. "There are a lot of kids here who need a Big Brother or Big Sister so that they can have what we have,” comments Jefry. “Lincoln is someone I can really trust. Having him as my Big Brother is cool because he is here just for me. And I'm here for him, too." Lincoln nods, "I don't take friendship lightly.... Jefry is my friend,” he says. “We're a match made in heaven."

On September 14th the 8th Annual College Bound Movers (CBM) Golf Classic benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Nashua & Greater Salem took place at the Amherst Country Club. The BBBS one-to-one mentoring program is without charge for families therefore community support for fundraisers like the CBM Cares Golf Classic is critical in accomplishing their mission to support kids with positive role models. “It takes an incredible amount of support from many CBM volunteers, raffle & auction item donors, event sponsors and over 100 golfers to make this event a huge success and for that we are grateful”, says Joy Barrett CEO of the BBBS Nashua & Salem agency. Breakfast was provided by Frederick’s Pastries; Texas Roadhouse generously prepared a delicious lunch and snacks and beverages were donated by Frito Lay. This year the CBM Cares Golf Classic raised over $30,000 in which 100% of proceeds will be donated directly to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Nashua & Greater Salem to support their mentoring programs.
