How it Works

"My Big Brother makes me laugh; he tells me I can be anything I want to be."

In school-based mentoring programs, Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one mentoring in the classroom, school library, school computer room, neighborhood community center, or other set location. Bigs and Littles typically meet once a week to read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life and personal issues – just as friends do.

School-based mentoring is not a tutoring program. However, research has shown that of all children matched with a Big in school:

  • 58% improved their school performance
  • 65% showed higher levels of self-confidence
  • 55% had a better attitude toward school

Mayor Donnalee Lozeau became Brandi’s Big Sister January 2006 in our site-based program where Donnalee had lunch with her Little Sister once a week in her elementary school. This paved the way for a great friendship and soon after being matched, both agreed to transition into the community program so that they could spend more quality time together having fun!

This match is one that will last, for the bonds of friendship are strong!
