Big Brothers Big Sisters Announces 2009 Big Sister of the Year for Summit/Wasatch Counties
(December 14, 2009) – Park City - Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah recognizes the dedication and commitment of their volunteers and awards the “Big of the Year” to those that stand out from the other 1,800 (statewide) Bigs. This year we are honored to recognize Deon Ridenour for the positive impact she has had in her Little Sister Vanessa’s life.
Deon began her friendship with Vanessa through our School-Based program and have now transitioned to our Community-Based program. The two enjoy “girl stuff” together; shopping, talking and painting nails. But, it hasn’t always been that way. In fact, when they began Vanessa was very shy and Deon says, “I had to learn patience, persistence and trust building.” Deon developed a trust with Vanessa by continuing to go to school each week, eating lunch together, and helping with math and reading. Soon, Vanessa opened up and began to grow into a true Little Sister. Vanessa gets very excited to show Deon how well she is doing in school now and takes pride in her accomplishments. Now that they have the freedom of meeting outside the school they enjoy hiking and biking and exploring nature. Their friendship has become one that will last for several years.
One of the best days Deon remembers is when they moved into the Community-Based program, she went to pick up Vanessa and received a large smile and huge hug. Deon says, “It truly is the little moments in life that count and have the biggest impact in our hearts and souls. My relationship with Vanessa reminds me that little moments do not come on demand.”
Vanessa’s family says they love to see how excited she is when Deon comes to pick her up and how kind Deon has been.
These improvements in Vanessa’s life and in Deon’s are what Big Brothers Big Sisters is all about; everyday activities helping children reach their full potential through one to one friendships. We are proud to have tremendous volunteers like Deon who take up the challenge to enhance a child’s life right here in Summit & Wasatch Counties. We are always looking for caring adult mentors who have a few hours a week to give to a child in your community. If you’d like more information about becoming a volunteer or learning how you can sponsor a match like Deon & Vanessa, please contact Ericka Wells at 435-649-9366.
