Disc golfers hope to raise record funds supporting local charity

Combining one of the fastest growing sports in Utah and a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, the third annual "Disc Golf for Kid's Sake" is planned to kick off at Creekside Park on Saturday,Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Event organizer Brent Walton hopes to increase last year's donations from $7,500 to $10,000.

The sport that began only in the late 60s involves discs and baskets with the scoring somewhat mirroring golf has become increasingly popular in Utah, and the city of Holladay hosts one of the finest venues.

"I really just want to raise awareness for the sport of disc golf and in turn support our local Big Brothers Big Sisters," Walton said.

Walton has been a "big brother" for almost three years and had the idea in 2008 to tie his favorite sport with a fundraiser for the organization he holds close to his heart. Walton began organizing the event by gathering donations for prizes.

"I did a lot of door-to-door and phone work and kept asking until someone would say yes," Walton said.

Geared toward children and families, all activities except the disc golf tournament are free. Children can enjoy face painting, a bounce house and meet their favorite local team mascots from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Free Einstein bagels and Starbucks coffee will be served in the morning and lunch will be provided by Barbacoa Mexican Grill.

"I'd like to reiterate that this is a family-friendly fun festival, where the disc golf is optional, but the fun is mandatory," Walton said.

The golf tournament begins at 10:45 a.m. and the entry fee is $50. Participants will be eligible for thousands of dollars in prizes, including tickets to see the Utah Jazz, lift tickets to the Canyons Ski Resort, raft trips vacations and gift certificates.

Walton is hopeful he can design an event model for others to plan future functions in surrounding states.

"I know a lot of people in the disc golf industry. It would be a viable thing because there are disc golf associations in every state and it would be easy to pair them up with a Big Brothers Big Sisters," Walton said.

Walton said he hopes Holladay residents come out to enjoy the free festivities. Donations will be taken throughout the day with all proceeds benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah.

For further information regarding entry into the tournament, residents can consult the website at www.tudg.com/bbbsu.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS BOWL’S A STRIKE FOR KIDS IN UTAH

(March, 17, 2009) Salt Lake City, UT – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is excited to announce record participation in our 26th Annual Bowl for Kid’s Sake that took place on March 13, 2010 at All Star Lanes in Sandy. Thanks to the community, business, and partner support we raised $77,753.00 for the event which just took us over our goal of $77,000. In a year in which the economy is tough, it gives Big Brothers Big Sisters great pride in knowing that the community supports and stands behind the quality, safe, and trusting friendships that we build and support each day in neighborhoods throughout the state. We have a goal of serving 1,900 children statewide in 2010. The cost to recruit, interview, thoroughly screen volunteers, and support each volunteer, child and family for the life of the match is approximately $727.00 per match which is why the support for these fundraising events is vital to the success of our program. Extensive research proves that our one to one relationships are key to the future success of the children we serve showing that a child with a mentor for at least one year is more likely to improve academic behavior, have stronger relationships with peers and family, and have higher self confidence than those without a mentor thus translating into a generation ready to take an active role in the future of our state.

The public can still get involved in one of the remaining four Bowl for Kid’s Sake events taking place around the state. They are:

March 27th at Davis Lanes in Layton
March 27th at Dixie Bowl in St. George
March 27th at Jupiter Bowl in Park City
September 18th at Jack & Jill Bowling in American Fork

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF UTAH LAUNCHES FIRST BOWLING PIN ART AUCTION

(March 11, 2009)Salt Lake City, UT - Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah launched a fun, new way to support their annual fundraiser, Bowl for Kid's Sake, this year as they collaborated with nationwide artist to design unique, one-of-a-kind bowling pins. Aritist used used bowling pins as their canvas and created items such as a working lamp, a dinasour hatching out of it's shell, and a headhunter complete with tiny skulls. Local cartoonist, Pat Bagley, thought the tall pin reminded him of Sarah Palin's high hair so he created a characature of Sarah Palin including her infamous crib note hand saying "you betcha". Everything is available on eBay from March 11th - 18th and 100% of the proceeds will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah. See all the pins available using this link : http://www.bbbs.org/site/c.enJCKINqFqG/b.5842507/k.A124/Pin_Project_Home.htm

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah Announces Bigs of the Year

(January 4, 2010) Salt Lake City, UT – As part of National Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is excited to recognize outstanding volunteers who have dedicated themselves to improving and positively impacting the lives of children throughout Utah. These volunteers represent the power a caring adult role model can have right here in our community.
In 2009, Big Brothers Big Sisters served over 1,850 children statewide which means that we had over 1,850 committed volunteers share everyday moments with these young folks. 15 volunteers statewide were nominated their Match Support Specialists, the child’s family, and the Little themselves, to be recognized at Big of the Year and 6 were awarded the title for 2009. These volunteers were chosen from both our Community Based and School Based programs. Each of these six volunteers have gone above and beyond what we ask of a volunteer which would mean they have been friends for more than one year, have made an impact in their life and/or played a part in creating new successes in their school performance. These changes are the building blocks of success on which the children can begin to form a brighter future.
Investment in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is a sound investment and one that changes each community and neighborhood across the state. The donations we receive will ensure we continue to provide professional support to each of our volunteers, children and their families. The dollars are put directly into creating and maintaining safe, trusting friendships from recruitment through the life of the match. Beyond School Walls, introduced by Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania, is a unique workplace mentoring program in which companies give back to their communities by hosting children from area schools at their offices. Comcast launched its Beyond School Walls program last year in Philadelphia as part of a $10 million national commitment to support Big Brothers Big Sisters, which includes airtime for public service announcements, program sponsorships, national and local board member support, and Comcast leadership development and training opportunities for the organization’s staff leaders.  It also includes the sponsorship of the Beyond School Walls program in multiple cities. In addition to making it possible in Sandy, the program will launch in Houston; Minneapolis/St. Paul and Hartford later this year to help further enrich the lives of young people.

“We couldn’t be happier about this new partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah and Sandy Elementary School, which allows us to make a significant, direct impact in the lives of many more children,” said Comcast Market Vice President Rodrigo Lopez. “This effort is consistent with our commitment to developing tomorrow’s leaders by promoting community service and working with young people in their pursuit of better lives and opportunities.”

This is an amazing opportunity for the youth of our program. They will be learning new life skills as they will take apart and re-build a bicycle. We invite all media to join us on Friday, April 10th from 6-8pm at the Salt Lake City Bicycle Collective at 2312 S. West Temple in Salt Lake City for our first session. Big Brothers Big Sister of Utah partners with United Way of Utah County

Salt Lake City, UT (February 27, 2008) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is proud to announce a new partnership with United Way of Utah County. "We are very pleased to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah as we work towards creating change in specific priorities in our community," said Bill Hulterstrom, president and CEO of United Way of Utah County. This partnership gives Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah the opportunity to grow awareness of our programs in the communities of Utah County. Currently there are two Site-Based programs at Fox Hollow Elementary and Grove Crest Elementary. These schools allow our volunteer “Bigs” from the community to meet with their Little Brother or Sister on school grounds to work on homework, play games and just be friends. Depending on future funding, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah hopes to expand into a Community Based program in Utah County which will support more children in the area with one-to-one mentors. At this time we do have volunteers that commute from Utah County into the Salt Lake Valley to mentor children. This partnership also means employees in Utah County are now able to designate Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah as their charity of choice through their United Way of giving.
