School-Based Bigs
In School-Based mentoring, a volunteer Big is matched with a young person in a local school. Then, one hour each week, two to four times a month, the Big and Little share a variety of activities at the school, such as going over homework, watching a track meet, eating lunch on the playground, or just talking together. Our School-Based program makes it easy for Bigs to volunteer during the work day, and many of our schools benefit from a commitment by nearby corporations that give employees time off to visit their Littles.
School-Based mentoring is not a tutoring program. However, research has shown that of all children matched with a Big in school:
-
58% improved their school performance
-
65% showed higher levels of self-confidence
-
55% had a better attitude toward school
