Bring a Little Magic into Someone's Life — Become a Big
Now that you’ve read about us, we hope you have a good sense of why it is so important for children to have mentors—and why we want to encourage more people to volunteer as Big Brothers or Big Sisters with us.
It’s also important that you understand what is special about Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring:
We have a careful process for evaluating adults and children so that we can make the strongest and best matches between a child and their Big Brother or Big Sister.
One of the factors we use in matching a volunteer with a child is geography. So, sometimes, we may not be able to match a volunteer because there isn’t a suitable child in the same area. This is especially true for women volunteering to be Big Sisters, because we often do not have a lot of young girls waiting for a Big.
We ask our volunteer mentors to commit to being matched for a minimum of a year, and to meet with their Little Brother or Little Sister a minimum of 2-4 times per month. (This commitment is important because it takes time for a relationship to develop and to have a positive impact).
Once the match is made, we need our Big Brothers and Big Sisters to have regular monthly contact with our Match Support team. The more we know you and your Little, and the more we understand your match, the better we are at coaching and supporting your match and alerting you to upcoming activities and events.
Becoming a mentor isn’t right for everyone….but everyone can help support Big Brothers Big Sisters and the work that we do.
So, let us know what you want to do!
