Who We Are
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana (BBBS) celebrated its 40th year anniversary on November 15, 2007. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana was founded in 1967 as Jefferson County Big Brothers Association by Louisville native, the late Chandler Herrick. In 1972, BBBS joined The Metro United Way as a member agency. In that same year, the agency began serving girls as well as boys. The name changed to Big Brothers Big Sisters to reflect that change. Initially serving only Jefferson County, the program has grown to serve 11 surrounding counties, including 3 counties in Indiana.
“I had the opportunity to speak to Chandler Herrick before he passed away,” says Jeri Swinton, the Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kentuckiana. “He said to me he never dreamed the organization would reach the level of growth that it has and affect change in so many children’s lives.”
So far this year, the agency has served over 1,700 children. Volunteers are, foremost, friends to children with untapped potential. The "Bigs" are high school students or adults of all ages, and from all walks of life, who are positively affecting the lives of their "Littles" by sharing everyday activities and exploring new possibilities for themselves and their “Littles.”
