School Program:

  • I understand that spending one-to-one time with my Little consistently is one of the most important things I can do as a volunteer. Therefore, I will meet with my Little an average of one (1) hour each week during the school year and maintain contact in summer.
  • I will contact the school and/or BBBS staff if I cannot attend my scheduled meeting or if I will be late.
  • I agree to see my Little only on school grounds, at school sanctioned activities or at BBBS staffed events. I will not transport my Little to/from school or events.
  • I will follow all school rules as outlined by school personnel and BBBS Support Staff School Rules

Although each elementary school enforces different rules for visitors, there are some basic guidelines to ensure you are following school policies and modeling appropriate behavior.

  • Visitors must sign-in and sign-out at the front office each time they visit their Littles.
  • BBBS asks all volunteers to fill out a brief journal sheet/activity log upon signing out.
  • Walk in the halls, show respect for school property, and use appropriate language.
  • Respect classes in session by moving through the hallways quietly.
  • Use play equipment properly. Schools may allow you to borrow gym equipment, such as basketballs, footballs, or even ice skates, if you ask nicely.
  • Use bathrooms properly and keep them neat and clean. Some schools require Bigs to use faculty restrooms.
  • Use your best discretion when it comes to proper clothing. Some schools have dress codes, such as not allowing hats to be worn.
  • Schools may have rules against bringing electronic devices to play with your Little.
  • If you are planning to use a computer with or without an internet connection, you may need to check with the school for regulations.
  • Chewing gum is often not permitted in elementary schools

Meeting with your Little

Each school has various locations they have approved for Bigs & Littles to spend their hour, such as the library, open classrooms, quiet spots in the hallway, extra rooms in the office, the computer and language labs, the gym, or outside. Check with your Match Support Specialist about what is available.

If you would like to check to make sure your Little is at school on the day you are expected to meet, you are welcome to call the school's front desk that morning. Otherwise, if you are not able to make it to the expected hour with your Little, you may call or email your Match Support Specialist or your Little's teacher in advance to reschedule for another day. They will let you know when there are upcoming scheduled holidays or testing days when Littles cannot meet with their Bigs.
