Big Brothers Big Sisters was awarded the 2009 Spoonfuls of Stories Grant

by

First Book and Cheerios

Big Brothers Big Sisters was awarded the 2009 Spoonfuls of Stories grant by First Book and Cheerios. Only one youth organization per state receives this literacy grant in any given year, so it is a great honor to have been selected. The grant comes in the form of books for primary students. First Book is shipping nearly 1,000 books to Ketchikan, Anchorage, and Fairbanks; books will then be distributed to all BBBS offices in the Alaska. There is no charge to BBBS for the books or the freight to get them to Alaska. We will have 12 months to pass out all the books and each child can receive up to eight. Thank you First Book and Cheerios for caring about the literacy of Alaska’s youth!

  School Transition Program

In partnership with the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District, Big Brothers Big Sisters is placing some of its school program emphasis on middle school students. Association of Alaska School Boards’ research has shown that students head toward dropping out of school when they do not successfully make the transition from 6th to 7th grade. BBBS hopes that by matching students through 6h and 7th grades, they will be secure 8th graders and move with greater confidence into their freshman year of high school. This effort is being funded in part by the Reuben E. Crossett Fund which has long been a supporter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Ketchikan's Annual Picnic!

BBBS Ketchikan held their annual picnic Saturday, August 15th in reasonably good weather! How did that happen!

BB and Leadership Council member George Pasley was our chef. Chef George cooked 42 hotdogs and 35 hamburgers!

We had matches and families in attendance. Also, some of the swimmers from “Bob’s 1K Swim” came by to visit with us.

The weather was good and the kids wore out the Community Director’s dog throwing the ball into the lake.
