What is the mission of this agency?  Faithful to God and in keeping with the United Methodist Tradition, the mission of Bashor Children's Home is to provide "help for today and hope for tomorrow" to troubled children and families.

How can people mentor within this agency? Adults over 18 have various opportunities to mentor elementary, middle, and high school aged youths in alternative schools as well as residential students. There are opportunities to be a one-on-one mentor to youths on campus in various capacities, such as skills based or tutoring.  

What areas of the county does the agency serve? Bashor serves all of Elkhart County.

What does the application process include? Bashor's application process includes filling out an application and completing a background check.

 

 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County

What is the mission of this agency? Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives forever.

How can people mentor within this agency? Adults over 18 can sign up to be Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Big Couples, Big Families or Lunch Buddies. High School students over the age of 16 can serve as Lunch Buddies within their school.

What areas of the county does the agency serve? BBBS serves all of Elkhart County

What does the application process include? BBBS' application process includes filling out an application, submitting references, completing a layered background check, home visit/interview and attending a volunteer training orientation.

 

 

Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County

What is the mission of this agency? To inspire and empower all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

How can people mentor within this agency? Mentoring at the Boys & Girls Club is one of the easiest ways you will ever have to impact your community. We work hard to fit you into a spot that fits your interests and passion and pair you up with a child or children to build a relationship that will help change lives.

What areas of the county does the agency serve? We have location in Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury, and Nappanee

What does the application process include? All mentors would need to fill out an application, have a short interview, and complete a criminal background check. Once completed we have an orientation.

 

 

CARES

What is the mission of this agency? CARES is the mentoring arm of Elkhart Community Schools. Mentors commit to spending 30 minutes per week with their student. CARES is in its 14th year and through the years has enlisted the talents of over 3000 caring adults.

How can people mentor within this agency? To be a CARES mentor, you complete an application/background check at the Rice Education Center on California Rd (next to Memorial H.S.)

What areas of the county does the agency serve? Mentoring is possible in all 21 of Elkhart Community Schools' buildings.

 

 

Crossing Educational Center

What is the mission of this agency? Empowering struggling students to become contributing members of their communities through academics, job training and faith-based mentoring.

How can people mentor within this agency? Adults over the age of 18 can sign up to mentor a student in their area as a Spiritual Mentor or a Life Mentor. Both mentor categories will focus on helping the student manage, organize and process life situations. In addition, the Spiritual Mentor will provide discipleship to a student who has made a decision to follow Christ. For more information, visit the Crossing Educational Center website.

What areas of the county does the agency serve? Campuses are located in Nappanee, Elkhart and Goshen (Entrepreneurial Training Center). The Crossing contracts with the following public schools in Elkhart County to serve their students, as well as students that are not currently enrolled in school: Elkhart, Baugo, Goshen, Concord, Farifield, Middlebury, PHM, Wa-Nee, and Bremen.

What does the application process include? The Crossing Educational Center’s application process consists of: completing an online application; completing a background check; visiting the classroom or attending a school activity to get to know the students. School and classroom visits will allow the mentor to get to know the students and determine which one they develop a natural connection with, which may then develop into a mentor relationship.

 

 

DreamsWork

What is the mission of this agency? Partnering with parents and educators to prepare students for college and career success through on-campus and off-campus discussions and activities.

How can people mentor within this agency? Mentors over 18 commit to 30-40 minutes a week as discussion and activity facilitators in school-based clubs.  These clubs are for fourth through twelfth grades, and while hours vary during the day and school year, they are generally during the morning and lunch hours.  Career presenters are also needed at all age levels.  Off-campus mentors are needed to help plan and chaperone events.  

What areas of the county does the agency serve? DreamsWork holds clubs at Hawthorne, Roosevelt, and Mary Beck elementary schools, all three Elkhart Community middle schools, and Central and Memorial high schools. 

What does the application process include? Applicants must complete a DreamsWork volunteer application and pass a criminal background check administered by Elkhart Community Schools.

 

 

Elkhart County CASA Program

What is the mission of this agency? To provide advocacy in the juvenile court system for children who have been victims of abuse and neglect.

How can people mentor within this agency? Adults over 21 can participate by going through training to be sworn in by the Elkhart Juvenile Magistrate as an officer of the court.  After this, they will work with the CASA program to identify a child/ren that is involved with the Department of Child Services that they would like to advocate for. The volunteer will then begin developing a relationship with both the child/ren they are assigned to and the other parties involved in order to best advocate to the court for the child/ren they are assigned to.

What areas of the county does the agency serve? Elkhart County CASA serves all of Elkhart County.

What does the application process include? The application process includes filling out an application, an interview, 34 hours of training, and a 1 year commitment to the program.

 

 

Elkhart Literacy Project

What is the mission of this agency? This project is designed to empower adult learners and to fulfill their educational and personal aspirations as well as to educate the Elkhart community about the effect of low level literacy on the health of the community. All residents of Elkhart County will experience the power and possibility that literacy offers.

How can people mentor within this agency? Once a week, volunteer tutors over 18 meet one-on-one with adult learners in classrooms and libraries. 

What areas of the county does the agency serve? The Adult Literacy Program serves all of Elkhart County.

What does the application process include? The application process includes a volunteer mentor application form, orientation, and training.

 

 

Elkhart Youth & Community Center

How can people mentor within this agency? Individuals can volunteer to serve with Special Populations Swim Program, Afterschool Program, referee or coach a youth sports team.

What areas of the county does the agency serve? The Elkhart Youth & Community Center serves all of Elkhart County

What does the application process include? Fill out a volunteer application form and specify on the form what sort of coaching or mentoring you would like to do.

 

 

Five Star Life

What is the mission of this agency? To inspire students to commit to live by five values: respect, responsibility, sacrifice, courage, and integrity; to connect each student to an adult who is already living by these values; and to challenge students to raise their GPA or maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.

What does the application process include? The application process includes filling out an application, a phone interview, an in-person interview, a reference check, a background check, and training.

 

 

Girls on the Run Michiana

What is the mission of this agency? Girls on the Run inspires 3rd-5th grade girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun and interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running.

How can people mentor within this agency? Women 18 and older can serve as volunteer coaches to a group of 8-15 girls after school twice a week for 10 weeks.  Coaches are trained and provided with a step-by-step curriculum.  Coaches do not need to be runners.

What does the application process include? An online application, background check, and a brief phone interview.

What is the mission of this agency?To empower young people to own their economic success through volunteer-delivered educational programs focused on financial literacy, career readiness and entrepreneurship.

How can people mentor within this agency?Teach a JA class! Elementary Schools classes are 30 minutes, once a week for 5 weeks. Jr. High classes are 45 minutes, once a week for 6 weeks. High Schools classes are 45 minutes and vary in length of time required depending on the program. 

What areas of the county does the agency serve?JA programs are offered in classrooms across Elkhart County. Contact us to see if JA is in a school near you!

What does the application process include?Interested volunteers complete a simple application process and must undergo 90 minutes of training before going into the classroom. A background check may be required by the school you are matched with.

 

 

Mentoring Matters

How can people mentor within this agency? Mentors within Mentoring Matters work one-on-one with kids age 15-18.

What areas of the county does the agency serve? Mentoring Matters serves all of Elkhart County

What does the application process include? It includes an interview and a background check.

 

 

Reading for Life (Center for Community Justice)

What is the mission of this agency? To promote virtuous character development in the at-risk youth of Elkhart by providing stable mentoring relationships within the context of literature discussion groups.

How can people mentor within this agency? Potential mentors who have completed the application process and Reading for Life training will be assigned, along with a co-mentor, to an appropriate group of 2-5 teenagers.  Mentors help lead discussions (twice per week) over a teen novel that the group has chosen to read together; they also assign journal questions, help lead a short community service project with the group, and then facilitate a final presentation for the students' parents.  The duration of the program is approximately 12 weeks (between 25-30 contact hours). 

What areas of the county does the agency serve? Currently, there is only one Reading for Life location in Elkhart County, located at the Center for Community Justice.  However, Reading for Life mentoring is also available in St. Joseph County, where it was founded, through the Juvenile Justice Center.

What does the application process include? The process includes a short application, with references and a background check, followed by an interview.

 

 

Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!)

What is the mission of this agency? A nine-month program that guides students from 6th-12th grade through the process of starting a real business, including business plan development, pitching to an investor panel, obtaining funding, launching the venture, managing media campaigns, e-commerce and web development, and trade shows. End results are for those students to have fully formed and functioning businesses, carried on after they graduate from the program.

How can people mentor within this agency? Mentors commit time to help students in the YEA! Program to learn about the application process and the writing of business plans for their businesses.  There are opportunities for guest speakers, field trip hosts, classroom instructors, graphic designers, web developers, and investors to share their time and expertise with students.

What areas of the county does the agency serve? YEA! serves all of Elkhart County.

 What does the application process include? Mentors must apply, go through a short training process, and sign a contract.
