"Nearly 1,000 local children live a better life, do better in school and benefit from positive role models because of Big Brothers Big Sisters. There is no better way to invest in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County than giving them your support." - John Black, businessman
Children growing up today are faced with tough decisions at an early age. They are exposed to adult situations before they are mature enough to understand.
Big Brothers Big Sisters strengthen the community by reaching out a hand to help the youth. The children served face multiple hardships such as:
-Many come from single parent homes, are being raised by a grandparent, or have a parent(s) in jail.
-80% are living at or below poverty level.
-Many come from households where English is not the primary language.
-And, some come from homes with fewer environmental risk factors, yet still need a friend to help them reach a successful future.
By pairing children with a stable, reliable adult mentor – a Big Brother or a Big Sister – children can look forwards to brighter futures and are provided new opportunities. The children learn how to set goals and raise their expectations.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a volunteer and donor supported service. Though there are numerous costs involved, families do not pay a fee for services. We rely on contributions and the generous support of this community.
No matter the size of your gift, your contribution helps children living in this community to better face the challenges of growing into happy, confident young adults.
