"My Big Brother makes me laugh; he tells me I can be anything I want to be."

The site-based mentoring program is an innovative approach created by Big Brothers Big Sisters to reach a more diverse population of children. The program is designed to foster youth's academic development as well as improve social skills. Bigs and Littles meet for one-to-one mentoring at the designated school - either for lunch or as part of an after school program with some of our partner organizations such as the YMCA , R'Club, Recreation Centers - or they may meet at a neighborhood community center, or other set location. Site-based Bigs and Littles typically meet once a week - generally at the same time and place - to read together, play sports or computer games, or simply talk about life and personal issues – just as friends do.

Who are the volunteers?
Site-based mentors vary in age, gender, professions and interests. One quality all mentors share is the desire to offer academic support, guidance, consistency, and friendship. Through a mentor's encouragement, a student can achieve his/her potential.

High school Bigs have made a major impact on the children in our elementary school programs - what Little doesn't idolize a high school student?  It's a win-win for high school students who need to meet Honors or Club community service requirements.  And what better way for our youth to be able to demonstrate their leadership abilities, and experience what it means to help others through community service.

Who are the youth in site-based programs?
Children in the Site-based Mentoring program are kids who could greatly benefit from additional adult guidance. Students are referred to the program for many reasons, including trouble with school work, classroom behavior, poor relationships with peers or general unhappiness. Many children come from homes where quality adult attention is limited by single-parenthood, many siblings or transitional housing, including foster care. Others may be immigrants trying to adjust to a new culture. Most are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Whatever the circumstances, these children need an adult who is caring, consistent, knows how to listen and can be a good role model.

How do the children benefit?
Site-based mentoring is not a tutoring program. However, research has shown that of all children matched with a Big in a site-based program:

  • 94% improved their school performance
  • 98% showed higher levels of self-confidence
  • 97% had a better attitude toward school

Additionally, a 2005 study conducted by Dr. Grise, of Florida State University regarding the impact of BBBS site-based mentoring concluded:

“A longitudinal analysis of Big Brothers Big Sisters students shows greater improvements in reading for these mentored students in grade 3 through 8. The mean average gain for a Big Brothers Big Sisters student was

6 percent as compared to 1.7 percent by a non-mentored student.”

How do the volunteers benefit?
Site-based mentors have the opportunity to watch a child become happier and more successful academically and more confident socially. Most importantly, they develop a fun and lasting friendship.
