Community-Based Program

Bigs matched in a Community Based match meet at least two to three times a month with their Littles for a few hours each time. The Big picks up his or her Little at home and shares fun activities they both enjoy. It just takes a few hours each month to enjoy the simple activities you already do, such as:

• Going to a movie
• Taking a walk through the park
• Making dinner together
• Shooting hoops
• Playing a board game
• Participating in an Agency Sponsored Activity
• Or just hanging out and talking

Bigs in this program must be 18 years of age or older, no longer attending high school, and be able to make at least a one year commitment to a child. Each participant will participate in an individual interview, complete Family Care Safety Registry Check and provide the agency with three references. Volunteers receive an individualized orientation regarding the program and also complete a training packet to ensure that they are aware of program guidelines and expectations. Matches are made with considerations to such things as geographic location, interests, activities and personalities.

Besides our traditional program of one-on-one matching (Big Brother or Big Sister), you can also you can volunteer with a friend or with your spouse:

• Big Couples: Spouses come through our enrollment process together and get matched to one child, a great way to spend time with your spouse while making a difference in the life of a child.
• Teammates: Grab a friend or a roommate and share this fun mentoring experience together! A good Big is someone who can build a friendship with a child, keep promises and be a good role model.
