ABC Education Initiative 

When it comes to education, we have three main objectives for our children – Attendance, Behavior and Classroom Success. It is that simple. 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri, with the assistance of schools we work with, has started to track the Attendance, Behavior and Classroom success of the children in our program. Those children who are succeeding in school, we will celebrate their successes and offer them new challenges. Those children who are struggling in school, we will work closely with their parents, school, “Big”, and other community resources to chart a new course and ensure their success.

Emily, a Little Sister in our Community Based program and has been matched with her Big Sister Trinita for the past year. As a child in a single-parent household, Emily immediately benefitted from the extra attention and support and began to form a strong friendship with Trinita.

When her Big Brothers Big Sisters Match Support Specialist reviewed Emily’s ABC data (below), we realized the family needed help. Mom was understandably overwhelmed with running a single-family household by herself and Emily wasn’t doing well in school. Emily’s family needed a better plan.

Big Brothers Big Sisters helped coach Mom to set and enforce some new limits in the house. Big Sister Trinita became Emily’s “cheerleader”, calling her several times a week to ask about homework and her day at school. After a year of pulling together, Emily has shown remarkable improvement. Today, she is Attending school, Behaving when she gets there and experiencing Classroom success!
