Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to bringing the power of mentoring to youth from traditionally underserved communities. Through the following specially designed programs, we are able to target specific populations and communities.
Mentoring Children of Prisoners (Building Our Assets Together)
Research shows that 70 percent of children of incarcerated parents will themselves at some point be incarcerated – unless they have positive adult intervention. That is why mentoring children of prisoners is a key component of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ goal to reach more kids, especially those who may face significant risk factors.
We screen and match volunteers with children who have been identified and enrolled by their custodial parent or guardian. These matches can be either Community-based or Site-based.
TRUST
Transforming Rural and Urban Students Together (TRUST) is a three year grant from the Department of Education. TRUST focuses on expanding our Site-based program in Lincoln, Lancaster County and Saline County. The focus will be on matching 4th-8th grade students for a minimum of 12 months. The matches will be working on academic areas such as improving grades, classroom behavior, attitude towards school and relationship with peers.
Teen Parent Program
Pregnant and parenting teens through age 20 can be matched as part of the Teen Parent Program. In partnership with Lincoln Public Schools, HBBBS is happy to provide this wonderful service to this population. Matches will focus on life-skills, parenting and completing their education.
Community Learning Center
Heartland Big Brothers Big Sisters is the lead aganecy of two Community Learning Center sites: one at Norwood Park Elementary and one at Goodrich @ Dawes Middle School.
