"I wanted to give back to my community; however, being a Big has rewarded me 100 times over."

The Amelia Island Plantation will be hosting the 15th Annual Reggie Hunt Memorial Golf Classic at the Oak Marsh course on Wednesday, November 10, 2010. The event is held in Nassau County annually in memory of Reggie Hunt, a former Fernandina High School student athlete and 6 year participant in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nassau County program, who died tragically as a teenager in an accident in August, 1996. We are happy to say that we raised over $26,000 in support of our Nassau County program last year. Our goal this year is $30,000.  Thank you to all who participated last year and we look forward to seeing you out there this year!

Anyone who is interested in playing golf in a first class event to raise money for a very worthy cause can contact tournament co-chairman Tom Oden at 904-261-9500; 904-806-6854 or e-mail him at  toden@bbbsnefl.org for details or you can register on-line below.

About Reggie Hunt

William Reginald Hunt, Jr. was born on October 26,1980 in Fernandina Beach, Florida, and was a participant in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program for 6 years as the Little Brother of Cyril Traeye.

Throughout his young life, Reggie gave love and value to his family and community. He was an active member of the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, a Cub Scout, and played baseball at Elm Street Little League. Reggie participated in the Neighborhood Youth Crime Prevention Program, and received honorary awards in the Nassau County DARE Program under the direction of Tommy Seagraves, who is now the Sheriff of Nassau County.

Reggie found his true calling when he began playing his most beloved sport, football. He was a lineman on the Fernandina Beach High School varsity football team, and hoped to one day play in college and “put Fernandina on the map.” He planned on returning home after his football career to give back to his community.

Reggie was tragically killed in a gardening accident on August 10, 1996, and everyone fortunate enough to have known him has been left with a positive imprint in his or her heart. He was planning to play in a Golf Marathon fundraiser later that month, so in order to honor this remarkable young man, Executive Director Chip Wood to be the First Annual Reggie Hunt Memorial Golf Classic to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nassau County.

Cartoonist Ed Gamble created this poster as a gift to BBBSNEFL to recognize Reggie Hunt.  The Little holding the golf club is Reggie Hunt.
