Director of Development Individual Giving – [Islandia, NY]

Job Summary

The Director of Development; Individual Giving is responsible for building and managing relationships with individual donors/prospects and foundations to maximize financial donations to help BBBSLI achieve its fundraising goals.


The Director of Development; Individual Giving will report to the CEO.


  • Communicate Big Brothers Big Sisters vision, mission and values to public, donors and persons of influence.
  • Set and achieve, in close collaboration with the CEO, multi-year and annual agency revenue goals.
  • Develop and implement a written plan for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual and foundation potential donors capable of giving over time.
  • Manage a portfolio of 150 to 200 prospective donors.
    • Make 10-15 visits per month.
    • Develop and implement individualized strategies for each prospect/donor in portfolio to increase overall giving levels
  • Provide donor stewardship, manage information systems (gift entry; database management; report generation), and conduct prospect research.
  • Serve as a vital member of the leadership team by staying abreast of organization-wide issues and contributing to the development and achievement of the Agency’s long-term operation plans.
  • Additional tasks as deemed necessary.


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum 5 – 7 years’ experience in fund development
  • Demonstrated success in increasing individual giving
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in pipeline development, prospect review and qualification, proposal development, report writing, successful cultivation and solicitation.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license and ability and willingness to travel.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a portfolio of donor and potential donors with a proven track record of building relationships.
  • Effective, experienced and confident public speaker.
  • Expertise in forging strong relations with external constituents; fundraising experience, particularly in securing gifts and/or working with high net worth individuals.
  • Ability to motivate and lead staff, volunteers and members of the donor community.
