In 2021, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) and Merrell® joined forces to form a multi-year partnership that harnesses the power of being outside. Today, Merrell and BBBS remain committed to their shared goal of breaking down the barriers that many youth face in accessing the outdoors, and we are taking action so all young people can experience the many mental and physical benefits associated with open air activities.
This impactful partnership also brings awareness to the need for inclusive outdoor experiences, particularly for youth who do not have equitable access to nature, natural parks, or outdoor spaces. According to the Center for American Progress, communities of color are three times more likely to live in neighborhoods where nature isn’t easily within reach.
This September, in celebration of Big Brothers Big Sisters Month, Merrell® and BBBS are partnering with multi-platinum recording artist and actress, Jordin Sparks, to drive impact in this regard. Together they will host Bigs and Littles from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles for a special outdoor event centered around experiencing the wonders of a local park. Sparks will join the LA-based Bigs and Littles for a nature walk and other outdoor activities in Los Angeles’ Franklin Canyon Park, leading to early nature exposure for BBBS youth and the opportunity for their Bigs to encourage their curiosity and exploration during this experiential mentorship moment.
Thanks to the investments of our volunteer Bigs and partners like Merrell® and Jordin Sparks, BBBS Littles have the opportunity to engage, learn and discover the outdoors in new, fun and untraditional ways!
