Celebrating 10 Years of the Nation's Largest Workplace Mentoring Program

Beyond School Walls

Comcast NBCUniversal also successfully took Big Brothers Big Sisters' workplace mentoring program, Beyond School Walls, to a national scale. The program now includes approximately 400 children in 16 cities across the country. It brings volunteerism into the workplace, inviting Littles (students) to meet with Bigs (corporate employees) from Comcast NBCUniversal. Bigs spend time with Littles, doing anything from homework to providing guidance to just having fun. Beyond School Walls has grown from a pilot program to a successful and sustainable mentoring model for other corporations, and is now in more than 40 states and more than 100 companies.

According to outcome surveys, big results occur after just one year of enrollment:

  • Littles have shown significant gains in educational experience and social acceptance, maintaining or improving academic outcomes.
  • Littles have maintained or improved their hopes for higher education and educational success.
  • Littles have maintained or improved their attitudes toward avoiding risky behaviors, including smoking, drugs, alcohol, truancy, or violence.

About Our Partnership

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has partnered with Comcast NBCUniversal since 2008. As this partnership has grown, so has Comcast NBCUniversal's generosity.

Comcast NBCUniversal is the featured sponsor of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Bigs of the Year awards. This honor is given each year to a Big Brother and Big Sister who have had exceptional impacts on their Littles.

Comcast NBCUniversal has also involved many affiliates in its national day of philanthropy, Comcast Cares Day. Its donation of tens of millions of dollars’ worth of airtime for public service announcements has helped us reach even more people and encourage them to become mentors.
